Shadyside Alpaca farm is situated 5 minutes off I-69 just north of Leo and south of Auburn in northeastern
Indiana. The entire farm is around 150 acres. The home and property that we keep the alpacas on is located on a
5 acre plot where our family of 5 lives.
We currently have 3 white male huacayas. We purchased these boys from the same farm, Lands End Alpacas, after reviewing
the blood lines with more knowledgable individuals. We have been told we did
very well for our first purchases. All our boys are still under 2 years of age so we are taking them to a show
here or there as money and time allows. The boys are pictured below. They are pictured in order of age with the first
being Alexander, then Oddysey and Coronado.
The barn used to house the alpacas is a converted pig barn. There have not been pigs in it for years and it was
only being used for storage. We have cleaned it up and the layout supports a work area, 2 alpaca pen areas and
storage for hay, grain and other required materials. About 3/4 an acre total is what the 2 pens will have for
roaming. We only have about half that currently fenced and in use.
We have been learning about the use of alpaca fiber and have skirted all the 1st and 2nd cuts from our boys. We
created blankets that we hope to do a couple shows with. We are working on the 3rds which will be used for felting.
Next year all the fleece will be combined and we hope to create some roving and yarn.
We are currently looking into purchasing some more alpacas, all boys, that will be for our girls to show as our other boys
move beyond the normal showing age. This also works into our plan to help build our fiber levels.
Thank you for stopping by. We would love to have you visit or to talk with you about alpacas. Please feel free to contact
us anytime.
thanks, Mike, Michelle, Ashley, Haleigh and Alli.
